Marilyn Courtot (Children's Literature)
A widely praised and reviewed book, Dogsong is the tale of Russel Susskit, an Eskimo teenage boy who makes a 1400 mile trek with the last remaining dog team in his village. Russel is drawn to the old ways and to the village shaman who helps him prepare for the trek on which he hopes to find his own song. It is an epic journey that will forever change Russel's life. A Newbery Honor Book. 1995 (orig. 1985), Aladdin, $16.00 and $3.95. Ages 10 up.
(PUBLISHER: Aladdin Paperbacks (New York:), PUBLISHED: 1995 c1985.)

(Bookbird Reviews)
Young Russel Susskit is increasingly uncomfortable with the growing debarment of his Eskimo culture and is grateful to find in Oogruk, an elderly shaman, the model and teacher he needs to learn the old ways. As he begins to master Oogruk's dog team, he gains the confidence to begin a quest, one which, in Oogruk's words, is Russel's long journey north to find his song. As in all quests the hero finds a mighty beast to slay, danger from storm and terrain, and even a woman to rescue, but the implacable presence of the wind-driven snow fields and iey horizons lends the story its special flavor. As Russel exultantly embraces his venture, he indeed discovers his own strength and the wisdom of the old lessons. He also periodically slips into a dreamlike trance in which he seems to merge with a man of a bygone era. He shares the man's thoughts and adventures and finds the man is himself. Paralleling's the vision like sequences is a thoroughly practical description of dog-sledding and of other aspects of Eskimo culture the author neither romanticizes the hardships of this existence nor exaggerates the peculiarities of its customs; yet he succeeds in giving the brutal North a poetry of its own. If the merging of dream and real world is confusing from time to time, Russel's mental and physical stamina are never in doubt. How he will survive his return to village life is left answered. It is enough to have followed him through a moving and beautifully portrayed rite of passage. Something is bothering Russel Susskit. He hates waking up to the sound of his father's coughing, the smell of diesel oil, the noise of snow machines starting up. Only Oogruk, the shaman who owns the last team of dogs in the village, understands Russel's longing for the old ways and the songs that celebrated them. But Oogruk cannot give Russel the answers he seeks; the old man can only prepare him for what he must do alone. Driven by a strange, powerful dream of a long-ago self and by a burning desire to find his own song, Russel takes Oogruk's dogs on an epic journey of self-discovery that will change his life forever.

Marty Crisp (Audiofile, October 2009)
Paulsen's 1986 Newbery Honor Book introduces 14-year-old Alaskan Russel Suskitt, who is worried that his people are losing their traditional skills with dogs by surrendering to snowmobiles. Setting out on a modern quest with a dog team borrowed from a village elder, Russel crosses mountains and tundra in search of his destiny. The novel has just been released for the first time as an audiobook, but narrator Robert Ramirez is a familiar voice to audio bookworms. Ramirez places the dogs and the dangers, from polar bears to ice floes, in stark relief, his voice a fine match for Paulsen's powerful words. He believably uses tone to project the passionate intensities of youth. Ramirez's steady, inviting voice makes this a glorious blizzard of a book that sends shivers down the listener's spine. M.M.C.
