Robin Spano (Catholic Library World, June 2011 (Vol. 81, No. 4))
Original iconographic pages from three classic children’s books, Goodnight Moon, Little Quack, and The Story of Ferdinand, are read aloud and presented in American Sign Language (ASL) simultaneously by an on-screen signer. Weston Woods Studios has paired with Signs For Intelligence, LLC, to produce this outstanding series, which enlists the skills of some of today’s most respected and well-known ASL storytellers. As a CoDA (Child of Deaf Adults) and a native signer, I am excited to review this set, and extremely pleased that Weston Woods Studios has done an outstanding job of including an ASL presentation into these classic tales. Not only is this a fun resource for classes learning ASL, it is a rare opportunity for hearing, hard-of-hearing, and deaf viewers to watch and enjoy a video together in their native languages without subtitles or captions. In addition to the story, there is a vocabulary portion of the DVD with words from the story written on the screen, vocalized, and signed twice. This is an excellent before- and/or after-viewing activity that children can sign along with to build English and ASL vocabulary. Little Quack also features a fun “Count Along With The Quackulator” activity to reinforce counting skills in English and ASL. Another notable supplement is an interactive post-viewing quiz, presented in text, voiced, and signed, the viewer chooses the correct answer on the screen based on their understanding of the story. Instant feedback for correct and incorrect answers is given. Please note that the read-along captions can be disabled for the story portion only; the vocabulary and quiz portions have text that cannot be disabled. Lists of objectives, before and after-viewing activities, and a summary are provided inside each case, as well as other Weston Woods ASL titles. An onscreen prompt leads educators to a website for downloadable worksheets. This DVD production will be enjoyed by preschool to early elementary school classes, and could be used by older students-- even adults--learning ASL who might even watch it without sound to test their skills. 2009, Weston Woods, 18 minutes, $59.99 each. Ages 3 to 9.

Midwest Book Review (Children's Bookwatch, February 2013)
Part of the "Sign Language Storytelling Series", Goodnight Moon is a DVD adaptation of a classic bedtime storybook originally published in 1947, created especially to be thoroughly accessible to both hearing and deaf children ages 2-10. Allison Karman narrates the gentle sleepytime tale, while Missy Keast signs the words in American Sign Language on the television screen, and the camera pans over the simple, colorful piturebook images. Bonus features include read-along text, an interactive quiz, an ASL vocabulary, and an activity guide. Highly recommended especially for public library children's DVD collections, especially those that serve deaf children as well as hearing children. 18 min. Narrated by Allison Karman, Signed by Missy Keast Good Night Moon is a classic story that is a part of the bedtime ritual of countless children around the world. Until now, however, hearing impaired children could only look at the pictures unless someone was available to sign the story to them. This sign language version allows hearing impaired children to “read” along with the interpreter and enjoy the book on a whole different level. The story is read aloud by a narrator with an interpreter signing in the forefront. The backdrop shows pages from the book with the text visible to allow children to read along. For the hearing impaired, it is a chance to put the signs with the words; while hearing children have the opportunity to put the words with the signs. Children with hearing problems will be able to share sign language with their peers through a book that is familiar to everyone. The Vocabulary area offers twenty words that, when clicked on, show the interpreter signing that word. What a great introduction to sign language for the entire class! Further activities for the classroom are available online. Running time: Approx. 18 min. Iconographic. 2009, Weston Woods/Scholastic,, $59.95 Ages 2 to 10.

After more than fifty years, this story is still going strong. It is now available in a variety of formats including this board book edition. This one comes packaged with a pair of bunny slippers. They are cute with the blue and white stripes, orange around the tops, and of course the gray bunny with a fluffy white tail. It is a bedtime story that parents can read to their very young ones, and a book that seems to have had a soothing effect to help kids settle down for the night. All of the elements are there--alternating black-and-white and full-color spreads and the little mouse who appears in each colorful scene. This is a perfect new baby or shower gift. 2007 (orig. 1947), HarperCollins, $19.99. Ages 3 mo. to 2.

Share a bedtime story you remember from your childhood. Say goodnight to all the things in little bunny's room, like a red balloon, three little kittens and their mittens. Then say goodnight to the stars and the moon, and all the noises in the room. Visit this "great green room" again and again, and make an old favorite new. Category: Books & Babies; Classics; Read Aloud. Grade Level: Babies; Toddlers; Preschool. 1947, Harper & Row. Ages 0 to 5.

After more than fifty years, this story is still going strong. It is now available in a variety of formats including this board book edition. This one comes packaged with a pair of baby socks showing a cow jumping over the moon (same as on the cover of the book--the painting over the fireplace) and Goodnight Moon, plus some stars printed on the socks as grippers to help those toddlers from skidding on the floor. It is a bedtime story that parents can read to their very young ones, and a book that seems to have had a soothing effect to help kids settle down for the night. Bruce Adelson, J.D. (Children's Literature)
The axiom that you can't improve on an original will need some readjusting when it comes to this delightful board book version of one of literature's classic children's stories. This sturdy, 8 1/2 by 11 board book has all the charm of its smaller sibling while also featuring something all parents of young children can appreciate, large, virtually indestructible, heavy cardboard pages coated with a seemingly waterproof veneer. The publisher's designation of this board book as a "lap edition" is most appropriate. Young readers will be quite comfortable ensconced on a parent's lap with this book's broad pages spread out before them. Little readers will find the larger type easier to follow and the smartly drawn color and grayscale illustrations even more compelling than those of the original version. This is the perfect book for introducing toddlers and infants to the joys of reading. They will doubtless enjoy sharing this timeless tale with their favorite storytellers. 2001 (orig. 1947), HarperCollins Publishers, $12.95. Ages 1 to 3.
