Jack Ousbey (Carousel 38, Spring 2008)
I loved this fast-paced yarn which won a Newbery medal in 1986. It tells a rollicking tale of Jemmy, a rat-catcher's son, who is taken into the palace as a whipping boy for an obnoxious prince. It is forbidden to whip, smack, spank or cuff the young royal so Jemmy is punished in his place, and longs to return to the carefree life he knew helping his Pa trap the big rats that live in the town's sewers. When the prince decides to run away, taking Jemmy with him as his manservant, they fall into the hands of Hold-Your-Nose-Billy and his accomplice, Cutwater. The plot thickens when Betsy and her dancing bear, Petunia, become involved and the two boys take to the sewers in trying to evade capture. With sharp, humorous dialogue and wonderfully swift turns and twists in fortune, this is a splendid, extravagant romp just waiting to entertain young readers around the age of seven. At a time when bookshops are awash with supernatural trilogies, sequels and series, here we have a not-so-plain tale of villainy, subterfuge and friendship with a happy ending. YIPPEE seems an appropriate word with which to end. Category: Reading Alone. Catnip, 5.99.

A royal brat, that's what Prince Brat is. He's always doing something mean. However, he is never punished for his actions because it is forbidden to "spank, thrash, cuff, smack or whip a Prince". In his stead, an orphan named Jemmy is taken from the streets to be used as Prince Brat's whipping boy. Jemmy receives the spankings meant for Prince Brat. The adventure begins the night Prince Brat and Jemmy run away. Will a Prince be able to survive outside the castle walls? Read The Whipping Boy to find out. Winner of the 1987 Newbery Medal. Category: Adventure; Award Books; Classics; Humor; Novello. Grade Level: Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 1986, Greenwillow. Ages 9 to 12.
(PUBLISHER: Greenwillow Books (New York:), PUBLISHED: c1986.)

Robin Overby Cox (Children's Literature)
Bored Prince Brat has plenty of attitude and very little compassion when he rousts Jemmy, his whipping boy, out of bed to run away with him. Lest he gets his hide "flogged pink as a salmon" by Hold-Your-Nose-Billy and Cutwater, Jemmy agrees to the Prince's plan to trade places, escape their kidnappers, and return to the kingdom. The dialogue exchanged between a nasty pair of villains, an underdog, and a conniving brat carries the tale of two boys who must learn to rely on one another if they are ever to return to their own lives. Young readers thrive on just such talk and just such adventure. Introducing details of royal life, peasants, and paupers, the author immerses the reader in medieval life. The raucous language draws children into the well-told tale. Fleischman and Sis manage to do what few partners can--simultaneously teach and entertain. Chapter titles such as, "Chapter 19-Being a full account of the happenings in the dark sewers," are part of the romp for captivated readers. Children who enjoy this novel might also choose Karen Cushman's Midwife's Apprentice or Catherine, Called Birdy, Brian Jacques' Redwall series, or Gail Levine's Ella Enchanted. Readers who like the author's voice might also try Edward Eager's Half-Magic series. 2003 (org. 1986), Greenwillow Books, $5.99. Ages 8 to 12.

The loathesome Prince Brat and his whipping boy, Jemmy, are caught up in a series of adventures and misadventures when the two run away from home and exchange identities for a while. The familiar plot devices of a prince and pauper tale are revitalized with tongue-in-cheek humor. Although Fleischman uses a relatively simple vocabulary and simple sentence structure, the text is marked by eloquence, and numerous distinctive black and white drawings add to the overall richness of a fine, episodic novel. CCBC Category: Fiction For Older Readers. 1986, Greenwillow, 89 pages. Ages 8-12.
(PUBLISHER: Greenwillow Books (New York:), PUBLISHED: c1986.)

Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)
With his flair for persuading readers to believe in the ridiculous, Fleischman scores a hit with his new creation. Sis's skillful pictures emphasize events in the adventures of the orphan Jemmy, kept in his king's palace to be thrashed for the offenses committed by the royal heir, known as Prince Brat. It is forbidden to punish Brat, whose tricks multiply until Jemmy is tempted to escape the daily round of flogging. But the prince himself takes off and forces the whipping boy to go with him. As they get into and out of trouble on the outside, Jemmy hears that he has been accused of abducting Brat. When the prince arranges for their return to the palace, poor Jemmy fears the worst, but things turn out for the best at the story's satisfying close. Colorful types like a thief called Hold-Your-Nose Billy, Betsy and her dancing bear Petunia, et al., increase the fun. (7-11)

(Bookbird Reviews)
A round tale of adventure and humor, this follows the fortunes of Prince Roland (better known as Prince Brat) and his whipping boy, Jemmy, who has received all the hard knocks for the prince's mischief. When Roland decides to run away from boring palace life, he also decides that he requires Jemmy's assistance in carrying his lunch basket. The two are shortly apprehended by scoundrels, who kidnapped them and place Jemmy in a tight spot between their greedy demands of the king and the king's assumption that Jemmy is the kidnapper. To make a short story shorter, Jemmy's knowledge of the city sewers comes in handy, and Roland's change of heart is highly satisfy. There's not a moment's lag in pace, and the stock characters, from Hold-Your-Nose Billy to Betsy's dancing bear Petunia, have enough inventive twists to project air to it all. A top-notch read-aloud. Award-winning author Sid Fleischman blends the broadly comic with the deeply compassionate in this memorable novel, winner of the Newbery Medal. A Prince and a Pauper . . . Prince Brat and his whipping boy inadvertently trade places after becoming involved with dangerous outlaws. The two boys have nothing in common and even less reason to like each other. But when they find themselves taken hostage after running away, they are left with no choice but to trust each other. "A rollicking tale of adventure and mistaken identity . . . . Robust scenes and characters are vividly evoked." This briskly told tale of high adventure, taut with suspense and rich with colorful characters, was named an ALA Notable Book. Sid Fleischman's celebrated novel features brief, action-packed chapters and includes black-and-white illustrations by Caldecott Honor artist Peter Sis. "An 18th century tale about the escapades of a resourceful orphan and a spoiled young prince. . . . Full of adventure, suspense, humor, and lively characters."

George Hunt (Books for Keeps No. 59, November 1989)
Jemmy is an apprentice rat catcher who has the misfortune to be recruited as royal whipping boy, collecting the blows due to the obnoxious Prince Brat. When the prince decides to do a runner, he takes Jemmy with him as a servant, and their relationship evolves through several stages as they endure pursuit by soldiers, cut-throats and a runaway bear. Before their adventures climax in a rat-infested sewer, an understanding of sorts has developed between them. This is a brisk and eventful tale which keeps you wondering, almost to the last episode, as to whether the capricious prince will be humanised or not. It should maintain the interest of children acquiring independence in reading, and an author's note at the end, confirming the authenticity of the whipping boy custom, should generate some passionate discussion. Category: Junior/Middle. . ...., Magnet, 1.99. Ages 8 to 10.

A poor orphan boy, Jemmy is plucked from the city sewers and given the worst job in th kingdom. Several times a day he is dragged from his room and given a sound thrashing, and all because of a silly rule that forbade anyone to spank, cuff, smack, or whip a prince when he s misbehaved. But someone has to be punished--that s where Jemmy comes in--and it is his misfortune to be the Whipping Boy for the naughtiest prince alive. So insufferable is the King s only son, that he is known high and low as Prince Brat. Jemmy had been plotting for weeks how to get his raggedy clothes back and return to his carefree life in the streets. Then, the prince enters his room one night, and announces that he s running away and taking Jemmy with him. this is just the chance Jemmy has been waiting for, but when the two boys are kidnapped by evil highwaymen, Jemmy has to decide whether to fend for himself or the protect a hapless prince. n.d., n/a, SteadyReader Cassette; 79654, $30.75.
