Recorded Books (Recorded Books, LLC.)
Abelard Hassam di Chirico Flint--Abel, for short--is a rich and silly mouse. He spends most of his days just having fun, going to picnics with his wife, playing croquet with friends, and dancing at parties. Unlike most other mice, Abel has never had to work for anything. All that changes one blustery fall day when his wife’s scarf flutters away in a gust of wind. Abel races off to rescue it and is swept away in a rainstorm. When the storm is over, Abel finds himself washed up a deserted island. To survive the winter, this pampered mouse will have to work hard at building a home and gathering food. Can he figure out a way to get off the island and return home--or is he stuck living by himself for the rest of his days? With warmth and wide-eyed enthusiasm, this Newbery Honor Book will delight young readers with an insightful tale of a mouse rising to the greatest challenge of his life. n.d., n/a, SteadyReader CD; C7016, $30.75. Ages 5 to 11.

The winner of the 1970 Caldecott Medal, equally adroit with words and drawings, continues his exploration of the literary possibilities of anthropomorphic animals. Abel and Amanda were two newly-married mice, elegant in dress, manners and style of living. Caught in a drenching rainstorm during a picnic, Abel was separated from Amanda; and holding on to a nail in a board, he was washed ashore on an Island isolated by rushing waters. Falling in his ingenious attempts to cross the stream, the somewhat pampered, over sophisticated mouse had to spend a Crusoe-like year on the island. He learned to fend for himself, and in his leisure moments, finding some clay, he turned to sculpture; finding a book, he read. Abel finally escaped from the island during a season of drought and, after a fur-raising adventure with a cat, finally returned to his beloved Amanda. Despite the deceptively simple flow of the language, the author makes no concessions in his diction: “Drugged with the aroma of rotting wood, he lost consciousness. There was a din of cricket outside, and the pauseless roar of the long it was dark and hushed, like a crypt. “Over and above the imperturbable dignity of the style, there are moments of compensating wit, as when we are told that Abel “had studied mushrooms in Souris’s ‘Botany’ at home” or that he “ estimated the island to be about 12,000 talls long, 5,000 wide. “The line drawings washed with gray faithfully and delightfully record not only the rigors of Abel’s experiences but the refinement of his domestic existence.

While attempting to retrieve his wife's scarf, the wealthy, indolent Abel is carried away in a flash flood. He finds safety on a little island which, for the next year, becomes a place of endeavor and self-discovery. Steig's classic fable of Abelard Hassam di Chirico Flint, a stuffy, smug mouse, makes marvelous reading aloud. As read by the ever-talented Guidall, it's superb. Steig's vocabulary is considerable and, while some of the concepts may escape a younger audience, Guidall's smooth rendition, perfectly accented, propels the adventure forward with magical consistency, never losing sight of the protagonist's character. No one could read it better. This is a joy for all ages. S.B.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine Unabridged. 1994 (orig. 1976), Recorded Books.
