Jill Bennett (Books for Keeps No. 5, November 1980)
Two Americans have done more for the cause of making learning to read fun than anyone else I can think of. One is Arnold Lobel; the other is, of course, Theodor S. Geisel --- Dr. Seuss. Writing well for beginner readers is no easy task; The Cat in the Hat took over a year to write, but in the past twenty years it has helped countless children on the way to becoming autonomous readers. Now at long last this and five more of the most popular Beginner Books are available in paperback. These inviting looking books, the same size as the hardcover editions, are bargains --- 64 pages of rhyming fun for £1 each. Every primary classroom should have at least two sets, and make sure school bookshops are well prepared. More titles to look forward to next year. Category: Nursery/Infant. . ...., Collins, £1.00 each. Ages 2 to 4.

Yvonne Coppard (Carousel 37, Autumn 2007)
Re-launched to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the first publication, the cat is back. His delicious naughty behaviour has won him enduring appeal over the last half-century. I wonder, though, how he will fare this time. The innocent ignorance of bygone days has given way to an all-embracing, almost paranoid awareness of child protection issues. And here we have the mysterious (male) stranger who comes in, uninvited, while your mother is out. My four year old tester enjoyed the story, but nodded solemnly in agreement with the fish when he said, 'Tell that Cat in the Hat You do NOT want to play. He should not be here. He should not be about. He should not be here When your mother is out!' I hope The Cat in the Hat continues to thrill, imbuing a little of his anarchic spirit into an increasingly wary and overcautious generation. Category: First Steps. HarperCollins, £4.99.

Keri Collins (Children's Literature)
Since 1957, millions of children have loved the story of the mischievous cat in the striped hat who arrives on a cold and rainy day with his now-famous friends Thing 1 and Thing 2. Although Sally and her brother are admonished by their goldfish not to let that cat in the house, they ignore their practical pet--and the world of children’s books changed forever. Written using only 236 easy-to-read words, author/illustrator Theodor Geisel, who wrote under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss, created this book as a reaction to the 1950s classroom reading materials that were considered uninteresting and thus part of the problem of illiteracy in America. To celebrate The Cat in the Hat’s fiftieth birthday and to promote literacy, Random House has created this Party Edition with a snazzy foil cover, birthday logo, and a postcard to mail birthday greetings to the cat himself. For each birthday card received by mail or online, including the official postcard found only in the first printing of the Party Edition or a card created by a child, Random House will donate one book to First Book, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing low-income families with new books. Happy Birthday, Cat in the Hat! 2007, Random House Children’s Books/Random House, $8.99. Ages 4 to 8.
