Reviews :

Bill Boyle (Books for Keeps No. 40, September 1986)
A superb book, which incredibly has taken seven years to reach paperback publication in Britain, after its 1979 appearance in America. So much about it hits the target. The feelings of an, often puzzled, early adolescent at the behaviour of the world around her. The non-comprehension of inflexible school teachers at any attempts at real creativity ('What kind of poem is this? It doesn't rhyme at all,' said Mrs Westvessel) against Anastasia's valid defence ('It's a poem of sounds ... it doesn't have sentences or capital letters because I wanted it to look on the page like small creatures moving in the dark'). The absolute dictatorship of the formal learning situation decrees F for failure. Brilliant, understandable to child and caring adult alike. Category: Middle/Secondary. . ...., Fontana Lions, £1.75 pbk. Ages 10 to 14.
(PUBLISHER: Fontana Lions (London:), PUBLISHED: 1986 c1979.)

Anastasia likes keeping lists of things she loves and things she hates. While liver remains on her hate list throughout the year, almost everything else hops from one list to the other, depending on Anastasia's mood at the moment. When Anastasia's parents tell her she can name her new baby brother, Anastasia spends a lot of time thinking up the worst name imaginable for this unwanted addition to her life. Anastasia's humorous antics and creative lists will keep readers entertained throughout the book. Look for other Anastasia titles that follow this first book in the series. Category: Humor; Realistic Fiction. Grade Level: Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 1979, Houghton Mifflin Company. Ages 9 to 12.

Mark P. Tierney (Audiofile, June 1994)
Mixing a child-like tone with seriousness, Critt amuses the listener with her portrayal of a ten-year-old girl who is clearly wise beyond her years. Anastasia's continually changing list of likes and dislikes and her fascination with warts sound even funnier in an earnest-sounding voice. With all silliness aside, Critt voices Anastasia's maturity as she discusses the meaning of poetry with her father and the effects of age on her grandmother. This program will have wide appeal due to its humor and realistic approach to situations kids experience while growing up. M.P.T. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine Unabridged. 1993 (orig. 1979), Recorded Books, Two cassettes, 2.5 hrs., Book pak, $18.00, Three CDs, $29.00.

Children and adults alike will delight in this heartwarming tale of a precocious girl who discovers, to her dismay, that her parents are about to have a baby. Anastasia’s hilarious lists of her likes and dislikes--sprinkled throughout the story--offer a lighthearted counterpoint to poignant moments that reveal the worries and fears of a fourth grader. n.d., Recorded Books, Unabridged Cassette - Library Edition; 93441, $20.75. Ages 5 to 11.
