Donna (BookHive (www.bookhive.org))
At her christening party, Princess Amethyst has been given Wit, Charm, Courage, Health, Wisdom, and Grace by the fairies. Crustacea, the last fairy proclaims, "You shall be Ordinary". As Princess "Amy" grows up, her blonde hair becomes mousy brown and her blue eyes turn grayish-brown. Her father's plans to find her a husband cause her to run away. She lives happily in the forest until Crustacea appears with an idea to solve her problems. This is when Amy's adventures really begin! Category: Adventure; Fantasy; Read Aloud. Grade Level: Primary (K-3rd grade); Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 2002, Viking. Ages 5 to 12.

Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D. (Children's Literature)
The King and Queen of Phantasmorania are preparing for their daughter's christening. Princess Amethyst is their seventh daughter and, as everyone in the kingdom knows, she will be the loveliest of all the princesses who have come before her. Against the King's better judgment, the Queen invites the kingdom's fairies to the christening. At the christening, the Fairy Crustacea proclaims "You shall be Ordinary!" With that, the Princess Amethyst begins howling from her cradle, as any ordinary baby might after such a long day. As the Princess grows, she becomes known as Amy, a simpler name for this tomboy protagonist. While she sometimes envies her sisters' beauty, she is allowed to run and play and discover the world of nature, while her sisters are confined to the castle performing tiresome, official duties. When her parents try to find a regal husband for her, Princess Amy runs away to the Forest of Faraway to seek adventure. It is there among the bluebells and squirrels that Princess Amy meets her destiny. Children climb into Amy's world and spend some days delightedly wandering around the castle and forest when they delve into this book. Delicate black and white illustrations add to the charm of the text. Readers will find Amy to be a sweet, independent minded young girl, who is not at all ordinary. 2002, Puffin Books/Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, $5.99. Ages 7 up.
