Beth J. Long (Audiofile, April/May 1999)
Popular youth author Bruce Coville and the Words Take Wing Repertory Company perform this stage version of The Dragonslayers. The story is brimming with adventure, mystery and romance. We follow Squire Elizar and his page, Brian, as they seek to slay the dragon that witch Grizelda has turned loose on the kingdom. Feisty princess Wilhelmina is on hand to aid in the search. The Repertory Company provides us with characters whose individualized voices flourish with eccentricity and take us to a fantasy time and place. This production also includes a conversation with Bruce Coville and a side of songs from the world premiere of the musical version. B.J.L. Mary Harris Veeder (Booklist, December 1, 1994 (Vol. 91, No. 7))
A dragon is menacing the kingdom, and the king promises the hand of his daughter to the beast's slayer. Coville adds some nice flourishes to this standard plot: a princess who dons a disguise and hunts the dragon herself (she wants some say in the choice of a husband); a servant lad accompanied by the world's oldest squire; some New Age forest spirits; a passel of talking animals; and a king named Mildred. The princess and the servant lad are particularly interesting characters, and the dragon is appropriately nasty. This nondemanding novel, atmospherically illustrated by Katherine Coville, has some appealing elements that will draw readers of both genders. Category: Middle Readers. 1994, Pocket, $14 and $3.50. Gr. 4-6.
(PUBLISHER: Pocket $14 and $3.50., PUBLISHED: 1994)

Kirkus (Kirkus Reviews, 1994)
A wispy confection from the author of My Teacher Is An Alien (1989) and other bonbons, featuring a fire-breathing dragon, a misguided witch, talking animals, a hottempered princess, a plucky young page, and "the world's oldest working squire." When King Mildred (yes, Mildred; he had a difficult youth) offers half his kingdom and his daughter Wilhelmina's hand to whoever slays the dragon created by witch Grizelda, only old Squire Elizar volunteers; but the feisty princess, in disguise, slips out to do the deed herself. A few quick adventures later, the dragon is bloodlessly vanquished, Elizar discovers that Grizelda is really his long-lost wife, and Willie achieves her heart's desire -- knighthood. Most of these ideas recall such longer fantasies as Patricia Wrede's Dealing With Dragons (1990) and its sequels, but Coville's sly sense of humor gives it all a tasty glaze. 1994, S&S, $14.00; paper $3.50. © 1994 Kirkus Reviews/VNU eMedia, Inc.
