Reviews :

Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger (Children's Literature)
Adventure-loving Huckleberry Finn and his friend Jim set off on a series of adventures in search of fun and survival. This reprint of Twain’s classic tale comes with a plastic 3-D puzzle of Huck and Jim. The story was created to appeal to boys and contains timeless elements: surviving family abuse, running away, living in nature, facing danger from men and the wild, and relying on wits and quick thinking to survive. Huck takes the reader along on his adventures--from escaping his father and setting off down the Mississippi on a raft with Jim to getting in the middle of a family feud and figuring out how to outsmart a pretend king and duke. When Jim is taken captive, Huck links up with old pal, Tom Sawyer, and the two join forces to attempt to steal Jim back. The language and some story specifics may create a gap between the story and today’s readers (for example, most readers today will not appreciate the humor in the king’s version of Hamlet’s soliloquy), but the themes of friendship, loyalty, and self-knowledge are sure to resonate. Part of HarperChildren’s “Adventure Classics” series. 2005 (orig. 1885), Harper Festival/HarperCollins Publishers, $6.99. Ages 8 to 12.

Chuck Trapkus (KLIATT Review, May 1997 (Vol. 31, No. 3))
You know the story, but not this version. The package states it is "adapted and read by Garrison Keillor," but adapted doesn't seem a strong enough verb to me. In fine print on the back, Keillor admits to "keeping the parts I loved as a boy... lopping off the last third of the book" and completely rewriting the ending. "If you enjoy the reading, I am sure Mr. Twain will forgive me." Unless you're a Twain purist, you will no doubt enjoy this reading, but I'm not quite so confident about Twain's forgiveness. These are serious liberties, made with an eye to abridgment and not necessarily improvement. Garrison's reading is, as his fans would expect, every bit as marvelous as his radio performances, with his richly modulated voice, delightful characterizations, close-enough accents and sense of comic timing. But he so makes the recording his own that it's easy to forget that he's reading Mark Twain (mostly). So when he comes upon the word "nigger," repeatedly and casually, it's as jarring as the KKK taking over Lake Wobegon. It sounds twice as profane somehow, like hearing the pope swear. Also included -- but not recorded -- is the text of Keillor's "A Note From Huck Finn's Father." More liberties, but clever and fun. Category: Fiction Audiobooks. KLIATT Codes: JSA--Recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 1996, Penguin-HighBridge Audio, Abridged. 2 tapes, 3 hrs.; Cardboard & plastic; content, reader notes., $17.95. Ages 12 to adult.

R. Bruce Schauble (KLIATT Review, September 1997 (Vol. 31, No. 5))
Certainly Keillor, host of the NPR radio program Prairie Home Companion, has impeccable credentials as a one-man institution of American arts and letters. As one of our most famous contemporary storyteller-humorists, he seems an entirely natural choice to read an updated version of this novel by Twain, the 19th-century novelist to whom Keillor is arguably our closest contemporary counterpart. He brings to his reading his customary easygoing smoothness and countryfolks sense of humor. The novel, as adapted by Keillor, is lighter, more upbeat, and less complicated than Twain's version. That's the upside, and it's also the downside. Literary purists will undoubtedly be scandalized by the liberties Keillor has taken with Twain's text: not just because he has omitted lots of stuff, but because he has taken it upon himself to provide an entirely new and presumably improved ending to the book. Twain's ending -- the whole business with Tom Sawyer showing up and making a big production out of "rescuing" Jim -- has been criticized for decades as being out of keeping with the rest of the novel. Keillor's solution is to make it disappear, and replace it with an ending that is less problematical and more to his liking. It you are willing to accept this move, and if you are comfortable with a sanitized, modern-Americanized PG-13 version of Twain's classic, then this is the tape you want. Purists and pedantic types, who will ask embarrassing questions about how far one can revise Twain's novel and still claim that it is Twain's novel, may want to look elsewhere. Category: Fiction Audiobooks.
