Laura (BookHive (www.bookhive.org))
Ten-year-old Justin lives with his mom and two older sisters and he has a problem, he can't seem to do anything right. His room is never quite as clean as his sisters and trying to cook, even an egg, seems impossible. Finally he escapes to his grandfather's ranch for a few days where his grandfather shows him the tricks of how to make his bed, wash the dishes without water everywhere and even make biscuits. Justin returns home with a new confidence in himself, but can he pull off his new found skills for his family? Category: African-American; Read Aloud; Realistic Fiction. Grade Level: Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 1986, Lothrop Lee & Shepard. Ages 9 to 12.
(PUBLISHER: Lothrop Lee & Shepard (New York:), PUBLISHED: c1986.)

(Cooperative Children's Book Center Choices, 1986)
Justin learns about the racist acts endured by black cowboys of the past during a summer on Grandpa's ranch. He also sees that even Grandpa makes his own bed, bakes and takes charge of the same daily household chores Justin used to hate doing when his mother said he had to. Typical stereotypes of today's males and females dissolve for Justin in this relatively easy to read novel about family ties, family heritage and black history in Kansas ranch country. Black and white pencil drawings illustrate the book. CCBC Category: Fiction For Older Readers. 1986, Lothrop, Lee & Shepard, 122 pages. Ages 7-12.

Refreshing, likable characters, an exciting rodeo and a history of the black cowboys combine to create a very special story, said PW. Ages 8-12. (Jan.)
