Zeta Shearill (Children's Literature)
David Balfour is left alone in the world after his father dies and he must close the door to the home he has known his entire life. Left with few options, he travels to find what remains of his family in Cramond, Scotland, where he discovers that he is the heir to a fortune and a house. Once he arrives in Cramond, he discovers that his family estate is occupied by his father’s brother, a sour and bitter man who is terrified that David is there to take away his money. David soon discovers that his uncle does not have his best intentions in mind when he finds himself kidnapped and given to a ship captain to be sold as a slave in the Carolinas. As David struggles to survive as a cabin boy on the ship, he befriends a passenger, with whom he manages to escape when the ship crashes in a storm. Readers will follow along in awe as David is thrown from his quiet country life into adventure and danger. The original oil paintings by N. C. Wyeth capture Stevenson’s classic and timeless tale and give the reader a realistic picture of David’s coming of age. 2004, Scribner/Simon & Schuster, $18.95. Ages 5 to 15.

Sarah Meitzler (Kutztown University Book Review, Fall 2005)
This book is an abridged version done by Timothy Meis and is a Scribner Storybook Classic. David Balfour goes to Cramond, Scotland to find his uncle, Ebenezer. Ebenezer pays a ship captain to kidnap David so that he can be sold as a slave and can not claim his inheritance. David befriends Jacobite Alan Breck. They travel through the highlands escaping death on more than one occasion. Alan helps David claim his inheritance. The illustrations are done in oil paints by N.C. Wyeth. The book is divided into eleven chapters. I usually don’t approve of abridged versions, but I would hope this version would intrigue younger readers to want to read the whole book when they get a little older. Category: . 2004, Atheneum Books for Young Readers, $18.95. Ages 8 to 13.

Sue Rosenzweig (KLIATT Review, September 2000 (Vol. 34, No. 5))
David Balfour, a young Whig, narrates the story of his adventures after being kidnapped and forming a friendship with the Jacobite Alan Breck in the late 18th century. Page's performance is a mixed bag; his Scottish burr is thick and that combined with the dialect and idiom sometimes makes it difficult to make out not only what he is saying but also which character is talking. There is quite a bit of foreign language vocabulary also. The bagpipe music adds a nice touch. This classic tale has appeal for all ages, but those who have either read the book or know the details of the historical period in which it is set will probably enjoy it more. KLIATT Codes: JSA--Recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 1999, Brilliance, 6 tapes, 8 hrs, Sturdy vinyl binder; plot notes, $57.25. Ages 13 to adult.

Elizabeth Sallee (Children's Literature)
The story begins with David Balfour leaving his hometown after the death of his father. As he leaves, the Reverend reveals that he has relatives in the House of Shaw who may accept David. His uncle originally accepts David although not too kindly. David then discovers that his uncle has sold him into slavery as he sails to the New World. A mysterious figure takes over the boat and rescues David from this fate. The stranger reveals himself to be Alan Breck Stewart, and David agrees to escort him to safety. Eventually, David returns Alan to relative safety, but Alan opts instead to force David's uncle to allow him his father's share in the family's inheritance. Stevenson's writing style combines the high language of the other Gothic novelists of his day and the simpler style of early young adult writers. Like Mark Twain and Charles Dickens, Stevenson purposefully misspells dialogue of certain characters to give a feel for their accents and to accentuate the readers' sense of actually being there with David Balfour on the rugged Scottish lands. Although this makes the book slightly more difficult for inexperienced readers to read silently, it will help prepare them for other such dialogue or even more archaic language. Like most writers of his era, Stevenson employs first person point of view to help build suspense and provide insight into David's character. This also allows Stevenson to make sarcastic jabs at political foes without interrupting the flow of the story or appearing to be on the wrong side himself. 2000, Dover, $2.50. Ages 10 up.

Teresa (BookHive (www.bookhive.org))
Sixteen year-old David Balfour has nothing left in his small hometown except the "graves of his parents." He has nothing in his pockets, either -- except some change and a letter addressed to a rich uncle he never knew he had. David's adventures begin as he finds out for himself why his uncle is despised by everyone in town. This classic adventure book and its illustrations by N. C. Wyeth, one of America's foremost artists, have been loved by generations of readers. Category: Adventure; Classics; Historical; Mystery; Scary. Grade Level: Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 1994, Alfred A. Knopf. Ages 9 to 12.
