Snow (BookHive (www.bookhive.org))
On the morning of his eleventh birthday, Will Staunton wakes up to discover that he is the last of the Old Ones, a race of immortal beings fighting to save the world from the forces of the Dark. This discovery propels him into a battle against the Dark, an evil that seems unstoppable. But he has help in the friends of the Light. If you enjoy this book, be sure to read more about Will and his friends in the prequel, Over Sea, Under Stone, and the sequels, Greenwitch, The Grey King, and Silver on the Tree. Category: Award Books; Classics; Fantasy. Grade Level: Intermediate (4th-6th grade). 1973, Margaret McElderry. Ages 9 to 12.

Lois Rubin Gross (Children's Literature)
With Harry Potter taking up residence in the first, second, and third places on all the bestseller lists, it may be time to revisit other fantasy stories to recommend to young readers who want to read adventure tales "just like Harry Potter." Susan Cooper's first fantasy featuring young Will Stanton, an eleven-year-old boy who takes on the Dark forces threatening to envelope the world, is a worthy alternative. Will finds out on his birthday, days before Christmas, that he is the very last Old One, the seventh son of a seventh son gifted with powers to defeat encroaching evil. Will is guided by a time traveler named Merriman who helps unearth the six magical Signs of Light which will ultimately defeat the Dark. A sinister snowstorm foreshadows similar meteorological disturbances in Stephen King's more recent, Storm of the Century. In fact, Mr. King seems to owe a great debt to Ms. Cooper and this book for its storm motifs. This is fantasy unleavened by wit; it is classic in its good versus evil conflict. It is also elegantly written and deserving of the many awards it has garnered through the years. Be warned, however, that the book's magic is clearly stated as transcending Christian times which could cause murmurs among parents who want their fiction Bible-based. 1999 (orig. 1973), Aladdin Paperbacks, $17.00, $4.99 and $2.99. Ages 11 up.

Strange things are happening in Will Stanton's world. Rooks are attacking people. An old tramp has come to town. And it is so cold. On his eleventh birthday, Will--the seventh son of a seventh son--learns the truth about his identity as the last of the Old Ones battling the evil forces of the Dark. The opulent voice of Alex Jennings is the perfect match for Susan Cooper's stylish, magical prose. The steady, measured tones of the Old Ones; the stern comfort of Merriman; the thready lilt of the Lady; the silky, evil overtones of the Rider--each nuance of character is skillfully brought to life in this unvoiced reading. One hopes the other books in the Dark Is Rising series will soon be available on audio read by Jennings. S.G. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award (c) AudioFile, Portland, Maine Unabridged. 1999 (orig. 1973), Listening Library, Six cassettes, 8.7 hrs., Book pak, $37.98. Ages 13 up.

Will Stanton is a normal boy in a normal, loving family. But on Mid-Winter's Eve, the night before his eleventh birthday, Will senses that things are changing--animals are afraid of him, he sees things that no one else does, and he feels terrified but doesn't know why. On his birthday, Will wakes up and finds himself in a world totally different, yet the same. And he discovers that he is the last of the Old Ones, immortals dedicated to fighting the forces of evil, the Dark. As narrator, Alex Jennings superbly conveys Will's mixed emotions--his fear, joy, confusion, anxiety, and growing acceptance of his two separate, yet occasionally concentric, lives, as well as his understanding of his role and the choices he must make in this battle between the Dark and the Light. Jennings fully voices the main characters; supporting characters are less individualized. Jennings creates vivid pictures of the many landscapes Will travels through, and builds the tension and enormity of this eternal fight up to the climax of this Newbery Honor Book. W.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine Unabridged. 2000 (orig. 1973), Listening Library, Six cassettes, 8.7 hrs., Retail pak, $30.00. Ages 10 up.

In midwinter on his 11th birthday, Will Stanton makes the remarkable discovery that he is the last of the "Old Ones", immortals who keep the world from being dominated by the evil "Dark". Soon, during the 12 days of Christmas, the Dark rises, and Will's life alternates between wonder, terror, and delight. nd, n/a, Unabridged Cassette - Library Edition; 21729, $41.75. Ages 10 to 14.

Gwynne Spencer (Children's Literature)
To Conquer the Dark, you must first let it in. For readers who know Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising Series, The Seeker will be a challenge. Like taking apart a house and rebuilding it as a boat, the pieces of the original are all there but reconfigured. Will Stanton is the seventh son of a seventh son, and the Last of the Old Ones, the only one who can hold back The Dark. And make no mistake, The Dark is rising. Just look around you. Read the newspaper, listen to the news, watch the reports. It promises to take us all in, to fulfill our wishes (as it does for the Maggie character in the movie). But its price is steep. This book is the Movie Tie-In Edition. Will Stanton, in the movie, is American (not British as in the book) but his courage in the face of evil, his willingness to lay down his life for the good of all, makes him an enduring hero. His task as the Seeker is to find the six signs that are required to hold back The Dark. In his time-slip quests, he battles evil in its many forms and, like all good heroes from Luke Skywalker to Frodo, he fears that he is not equal to the task. Like all of us, he just wants to go home and pull the covers up over his head and turn up his Ipod. But destiny has a way of ripping you out of your comfort zone, takes you away from watching Jeopardy or whatever it was you were doing when the call to adventure was in your face. This movie, The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising is magnificently beautiful, as well as bottomlessly frightening because it calls us all to the task at hand: to do battle with The Dark and not let it overtake us. 2007, Simon & Schuster Children s Publishing, $8.99. Ages 12 up.
