Reviews :

Chris Sherman (Booklist, January 1 & 15, 1998 (Vol. 94, No. 9 & 10))
Even though none of these eight stories feature human-eating monsters or razor-fingered psychopaths, they are creepy and weird enough to appeal to readers, especially those who don't want something too scary. Vivelo turns everyday experiences into something strange and fearsome: two children receive unexpected help rescuing trapped miners, an experienced teacher deftly manages disruptive students, the mysterious disappearance of an heirloom changes a girl's future. Four of the eight stories previously appeared in Vivelo's A Trick of the Light (1987), but the new ones make this collection a worthwhile purchase. Suggest this to classroom teachers as a model for creative writing. Category: Older Readers. 1997, DK Ink, $14.95. Gr. 5-9.

Twists of fate and mysterious occurrences will give readers Chills in the Night. A selection of high interest, easy reading short stories, this collection will thrill the young adult reader. Find out what's there "When Nothing's There At All," who makes noises in "The Haunted Schoolhouse," what dogs' dreams really mean in "A Dog Named Ransom," why young boys are turning into stone in "A Game of Statues," how stories disappear from "The Fireside Book of Ghost Stories," and when to get off of a time traveling "...Ride on the Dumbwaiter." 1997, DK Ink, $14.95. Ages 11 to 14.
