Reviews :

Jimminy! Chuck Trapkus (KLIATT Review, May 1996 (Vol. 30, No. 3))
Tom Sawyer never had it so good. Fraley is no mere mortal when it comes to reading a book. Calling this a performance, as the packaging notes do, cannot begin to convey what an amazing accomplishment Fraley's narration is. The notes tell us he crafts "36 authentic voices" for the various characters. Huck Finn, Aunt Polly and Muff Potter are standouts, but all are clever and charming and fitting. They're not just voices, but distinct dialects and distinct personalities, each with its own range of emotions and affectations. What reads like unfamiliar syntax and phrasings in print, now sounds like a comfortable Southern dialect with dozens of variations. And his extraordinarily exuberant Tom drives the story along with youthful vim and enthusiasm. Fraley puts so much life into every sentence that he comes close to overdoing it at times, but there's never a dull moment in this recording. The fiddle music between chapters lends a spirited atmosphere. Recall that the casual use of the word "nigger," while far less frequent than in Huck Finn, occurs here in a less mitigating context -- no moralizing about race relations in this volume (at least not on the surface). However, and although often critically eclipsed by the later Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer is itself a masterful work of fiction and is intended as much for adults as for kids. Show me a finer recording, and I reckon I'll eat it. Category: Fiction Audiobook. KLIATT Codes: JSA*--Exceptional book, recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 1995, Audio Partners, 5 tapes, 7.42 hrs.; Cardboard & plastic; author, reader, content notes., $22.95. Well over a century has passed since the publication of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876, but time has done little to diminish the appeal and enjoyment of this classic story of growing up in midwestern America. The world Mark Twain envisioned for his precocious hero is a “boy-perfect” one, where life is perpetual vacation, where good and evil are clearly defined, awe-inspiring contradictions, and where the joys of independent discovery always outweigh the severity of punishment. “Although my book is intended for the entertainment of boys and girls, I hope it will not be shunned by men and women on that account, for part of my plan has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in.”--Mark Twain n.d., Recorded Books, Unabridged Cassette - Library Edition; 86890, $39.75. Ages 10 to 14.

Jim Weiss is a wonderful storyteller, expansive and droll, with a gentle, ironic voice and a fine sense of timing. He also excels at character sketches, and listeners will be amused by his Tom, Aunt Polly, Becky, and Huck, among others. This production is a "storyteller's version" of the children's classic, though, so listeners should expect to move quickly from whitewashing the fence, to meeting Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher, to the graveyard scene. Weiss chooses only the highlights in this hour-long version. Though such brevity could distress loyal readers of the original, in the capable hands of Weiss, it may be a good way to tempt young listeners to read the book on their own. J.C.G. Caitlyn Payne (Children's Literature)
What does a young boy do when he witnesses a murder but is terrified the murderer will come after him and kill him if he tells anyone what he saw? This terrible quandary is just one of the trials young Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn face after they see a man killed. On top of this worry about being attacked by the murderer, Tom has to deal with a meddlesome aunt, an ornery teacher, and a pretty girl who does not respond to his schoolboy affection. Quite an adventure for a boy who started his summer trying to get out of having to whitewash a picket fence! Fans of adventure stories, mystery buffs, or readers who enjoyed getting into scrapes with Tom years ago will enjoy this tale of a mischievous boy and his assorted pranks, trials, and intrigues. The book is funny, interesting, and thought provoking. Readers may be put off by archaic language and slang, but once you get beyond the printed words, Tom Sawyer is a wonderful book about a loveable boy who could not stay out of trouble. Part of the "Adventure Classics" series. 2005 (orig. 1876), HarperCollins, $6.99. Ages 8 to 12.

Among the many versions of Twain's novels and stories, this two-cassette abridgment stands out for Garrick Hagon's appealing storytelling. Hagon lays out a well selected sequence of scenes and familiar episodes in an intimate performance. His narrative rhythm is exceptional, creating a style that draws listeners in and holds their attention. Characters are given good vocal color, but never overdone. Aunt Polly, Tom, Huck, and all the characters become part of a wonderful whole. A great choice to introduce Twain and enjoy a particularly fine performance. R.F.W. Ian Chipman (Booklist, Jan. 1, 2010 (Vol. 106, No. 9))
The fourth entry in Papercutz’ Classics Illustrated Deluxe line of graphic-novel adaptations reworks Twain’s classic tale of jubilant delinquency in a full-color manga style. The boy’s manic irrepressibility is a neat fit for the flitting quality of the anime-inspired artwork, and the signature fence-whitewashing scene is especially well handled. While the hoary dialogue at first seems at odds with the modern manga format, it soon settles into a nice rhythm that preserves much of the Twainian flavor. The lengthy adaptation is doggedly faithful, with little missing from the twists, turns, and digressions of the original. Grades 5-8

David Bennett (Books for Keeps No. 16, September 1982)
What I wonder are Puffin's motives in collecting these titles into a new series? Do they presume that young readers wish to add these so-called classics to their collections on a sort of 'yard of children's books' principle? Will it simply work out as an economical proposition due to copyright considerations? Are these books aimed at the doting aunties and ill-informed grannies market, who generally like to buy familiar and safe-sounding books for their young relatives? Given that they have arrived, who will read them? My librarian considers that children (and teachers) have enough on to keep up with newer and perhaps more meaningful books; They do not need to be 'cluttered' (her word), with some of the older titles, especially when not all are strictly children's classics anyway. I personally doubt whether they cannot be matched in style by more modern authors. Most make good stories, but not all so great as to be an indispensable part of literary growth. On a more positive note, most of these books are now adapted for film or television and as such frequently on the small screen. For this reason alone, on the off-chance that a pupil will want to read the original, a copy or two in the classroom, library or bookshop will not come amiss. They are attractively pieced. And so to the plot. Tom Sawyer and his chums are generally being pretty tiresome and superstitious and meet up with some thoroughly bad characters in a graveyard, which scares them to much that they go in fear of their lives, or more specifically of a sinister ethnic type who ends up, conveniently, blocked in a cave. Tom, who had planned to murder, pillage and take hostages at the beginning of the book gets handsomely rewarded and a few favours from a Miss Thatcher. I said these classics made good stories didn't I? Category: Puffin Classics . ...., Puffin, 90p.
