Reviews :

(Novel)
A prequel rather than sequel to The Blue Sword, McKinley's second novel set in the beautifully rendered mythical kingdom of Damar centers on Aerin, daughter of a Damarian king and his second wife, a witchwoman from the feared, demon-ridden North. The narrative follows Aerin as she seeks her birthright, becoming first dragon and eventually the savior of the kingdom- the legendary female warrior whose sword (much later) is wielded by Harry Crewe, heroine of The Blue Sword. Once again, McKinley's battle scenes are galvanizing and her romantic ones stirring, her characterizations have vitality, and her way with animal characters makes them distinct individuals without losing their animality. As much as romance as heroic fantasy (Aerin returns the love of the wizard Luthe though her feelings become dormant while she fulfills her mortal destiny), this and The Blue Sword can be read independently, but, taken together, they enrich each other - and the reader as well.

Uncertain of the past, Aerin-sol, daughter of King Arlbeth, decides to forge her own future by challenging the lashing tongues of the dragon’s fire. Aerin’s proficiency as “the Dragon-slayer” sets her on a quest for the stolen Crown of Damar, believed to be in the hands of rebellious northerners who threaten to destroy the Damarian people and their home forever. n.d., Recorded Books, Unabridged CD - Library Edition; C3590, $97.75. Ages 10 to 14.

A flawless production brings to life the sweeping fantasy tale of the lonely and unhappy Aerin, daughter of King Arlbeth and the "witchwoman." Scorned and rejected, Aerin hopes to prove her worth by recovering the lost crown of Damar. Roslyn Alexander's vocal performance ably differentiates characters without intruding herself upon the action, allowing McKinley's words to do the storytelling. The number of cassettes may deter younger listeners, particularly since the story starts out slowly, but tension and excitement build with each cassette. Adolescents who are continuously plugged into their personal cassette players may be wooed back to a worthwhile library experience with this exceptional production. Ages 12-adult. S.G. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine Unabridged. , Recorded Books, Eight cassettes cassettes, 10 hrs. 45 min., Book pak, $59.00. Ages 13 up.
