Annotation:

Artist and writer Natalie Babbitt (1932-2016) is the award-winning author of the modern classic Tuck Everlasting, The Eyes of the Amaryllis, Kneeknock Rise and many other brilliantly original books for young people. She began her career in 1966 as the illustrator of The Forty-ninth Magician, written by her husband. Her first novel, The Search for Delicious, established her gift for writing magical tales with profound meaning. Kneeknock Rise earned her a Newbery Honor Medal, and in 2002, Tuck Everlasting was adapted into a major motion picture. Natalie Babbitt lived in Hamden, CT.

Tuck Everlasting is a magical, almost mythical, story which is perfectly translated to audio by Barbara Caruso. This fairy tale is imbued with many levels of meaning. Winnie, a ten-year-old child in the late nineteenth century, encounters the Tuck family, who have drunk from the fountain of youth. She's the only person outside the family who knows their secret. This is a beautiful story of a young girl growing up, and, even more, it's a tender love story. Caruso brings her unique ability to mimic old ladies and little girls, as well as men and boys, from different time periods. This wonderful story is probably even better read aloud, especially when the narrator is as fine as Caruso. Listeners of all ages will love this! S.G.B. I love this book. It was first published in 1975, not always easily available since then, and now appears in a new hardback edition with a 'major motion picture' coming. From the wheel-turning image of the opening, the story, like Pullman's clock, has a marvellously sprung art and ease to it: 'three things happened and at first there appeared to be no connection between them... No connection, you would agree. But things can come together in strange ways. The wood was at the center, the hub of the wheel.' The reader then shares with ten-year-old Winnie the wonder of the Tucks' secret of everlasting life and then the dawning understanding of their situation. This is crystalised in the remarkable chapter, at the centre of the book, where Pa Tuck takes Winnie out onto a pond to show her what they have lost in losing life, living, change and death. It's a great 'read, a page-turner which educates and makes you marvel at life and stories - and face up to endings. A classic and a beautiful book. Category: 10-12 Middle/Secondary. Rating: ***** (Unmissable). ...., Bloomsbury, 144pp, 9.99 hbk. Ages 10 to 12.

Closing the gate on her oldest fears as she had closed the gate on her own fenced yard, Winnie discovered the wings she s always wished she had. And all at once she was elated. Where were the terrors she d been told she should expect? She could not recognize them anywhere. The sweet earth opened out its wide four corners to her like the petals of a flower ready to be picked, and it shimmered with light and possibility till she was dizzy with it. --from Tuck Everlasting

Life and excitement lie waiting for ten-year-old Winnie Foster on the other side of the iron fence that separates her form Treegap Wood. But Winnie s parents are overprotective and have forbidden her to leave the front yard. Winnie dawdles and mopes and complains to the sullen toad who is her only friend. One of these days, she informs him, I will sneak out, run away, and have an adventure! When that day finally arrives, Winnie discovers a magic spring that promises eternal life, and meets a strange and wonderful family named Tuck. but wherever there is adventure, there is often trouble too, and when a smiling man in a yellow suit begins to follow her, Winnie faces the possibility of losing all her new discoveries and never seeing home again. n.d., Recorded Books, Unabridged Cassette - Library Edition; 93220, $30.75.

A welcome reissue of a book previously published here in 1977. Long regarded as an American masterpiece, Natalie Babbitt's novel deals with a weighty subject everlasting life, no less - with a lightness of touch and a simplicity that never descends to the pedantic or the condescending. It tells the story of ten-year-old Winnie Foster's confrontation with issues of morality and immortality after she discovers a fountain of youth. Through her relationship with the Tucks, a pioneering family who have not aged since they drank of the fountain eighty years previously, she learns the complex dilemma part blessing/part curse - of their secret. Sounds fanciful, but is told with all the cool, sharp, clear-eyed 'realism' that represents the best of American writing. And don't be influenced in any way by the fact that a Disney version is in production -just read it. It's breathtaking. Category: Older .... Bloomsbury, 9.99.

Ellen Welty (Children's Literature)
The quest for immortality is hardly a new theme in literature for children or adults. Before the world had ever heard of a horcrux, there were vampires, elves, ghosts, and a host of other mythological beings who lived forever. In most cases there are disadvantages to the immortal state. Nowhere is that more profoundly and simply demonstrated than in the story of the Tuck family, who unknowingly became immortal when they drank from a spring in the forest. Their realization of their immortality was slow, coming after injuries that should have been fatal but were not and the fact that none of them were older while their families and friends aged normally. Winnie Foster discovers their secret accidentally and goes home with them to learn why it is so important that the secret not be shared. Unfortunately, a strange man who had followed the Tuck family as they were taking Winnie home overhears the disclosure of their secret. He forces Winnie s family to sign over the deed to the forest in exchange for telling them where Winnie is. In the ensuing altercation, the mysterious man is killed and Mae Tuck is arrested for the murder and sentenced to hang. Winnie helps break Mae out of jail but comes to a horrifying realization about what it would mean to be unable to die. This 40th anniversary edition has a foreword by Gregory Maguire and includes an interview with the author as well as beginning chapters of additional works by Ms. Babbitt. 2015, Farrar Straus Giroux/Macmillan,, $19.99. Ages 10 to 14.

With joyful exuberance, the unforgettable Tuck family and dear friend, Winnie Foster, come to life in this superb reading. Thomas honors both the subtle tensions and the underlying humor in this tale of a family that gains immortality and the mortal ten-year-old who befriends them. The novel examines deep philosophical questions about life and death in a way that makes them accessible and meaningful to children. Thomas's well-modulated reading, subtle character voicing, and perfect timing ensure that the reading is wholly riveting. Faithful to the shifting emotions of the story, Thomas provides an impeccable rendering of this classic children's fantasy. T.B. The Tuck family have unwittingly drunk from a spring of life and suffer a sort of eternal youth that keeps them apart from the changes that occur naturally in time. Eleven-year-old Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret just about the same time as does a stranger with devilish intentions, and the most assume some burdensome decisions about life and death, which she does with grace. Doomed to - or blessed with - eternal life after drinking from a magic spring, the Tuck family wanders about trying to live as inconspicuously and comfortably as they can. When ten-year-old Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret, the Tucks take her home and explain why living forever at one age is less a blessing that it might seem. Complications arise when Winnie is followed by a stranger who wants to market the spring water for a fortune. Winnie is a darling little girl at the tender age of 10. Wanting nothing more in the world then to get out of her little confined life. She comes across a boy in the woods of her home. One who, along with his family, can never die. Theyre all immortal. The problem is trying to keep the spring, which granted them this gift/curse, a secret. Of course, some dude finds out and trouble stirs, and while they do overcome this issue...the ending still manages to be heartbreaking. Not for Winnie, but for Jesse. The irony is not missed when they save the frog in the end and really its just a beautiful story. The Tuck family, a husband, wife and two sons ages 17 and 22, are simple, salt-of-the-earth folk. In the late 1700's, they drink from a spring of water in a forest that turns out to be a sort of fountain of youth: it makes them immortal, unable to die and permanently stuck at the age they were when they drank from the spring. Many years later, a young girl named Winnie Foster stumbles on their secret. The Tuck family takes her away with them for a day or two (which soon leads to some plot complications) while they desperately try to explain to Winnie why they think it's a terrible idea for her to drink from the magical spring herself, or tell anyone else about it. All except the younger son, Jesse, who asks Winnie to wait until she's 17, then drink from the fountain and join him in eternal life. The book is full of circle of life type of imagery: a Ferris wheel pauses in its turning, seasons pass, water drifts downstream to the ocean. The Tuck family feels like the wheel has stuck for them--they're like rocks by the side of the road, while all around them people are changing and growing and living and dying.
