Dorothy P. Royal (Kliatt)
15 superb stories by the author offer an outstanding portrait of African-American life. 12 of the stories were published before in magazines and other anthologies and include such gems as "My Man, Bovanne," written in 1971 under the title "Mama Hazel Takes to Her Bed." It is a warm, earthy story about a widow befriending a blind man at a political fund-raiser to the embarrassment of her grown children. "Gorilla, My Love," was published in Redbook magazine in 1971 as "I Ain't Playing, I'm Hurting" and is about a little girl's dignity and her hurt over the teasing children get from adults just because they are children. The three original works: "Basement," a story about an apartment superintendent accused of sexually abusing children by a girl who lies a lot; "The Johnson Girls," which explores relationships women have with men; and "The Survivor," longest in length and darkest in theme. Jewel is a high-strung, successful movie star with an abusive husband. He is killed in an automobile accident while they are arguing about her wish to continue a pregnancy. She blames herself for his death, so much so that she starts to have a nervous breakdown, which culminates in total derangement when going through the pain of the birth process. All the stories are powerful and thought-provoking, each one with a strong message. They are entertaining, with frank language, snappy dialogue, many with an African-American dialect, and range in emotion from utter despair to complete hilarity. There is something here for everyone.
